چکیده

Climate induced temporal variation, spatial patterns of vegetation and microenvironments, plant growth forms, soils and geology, and topographic factors influence hydrologicprocesses in rangelandenvironments. In Part I of this study,a gradient analy sis of 13 environmental variables identified temporal and spatial gradients in sagebrush coppice and interspacesoil surface cover types. Spatial cover types and temporal cyclic variations were distinct for both soil surface cover types. Part II of the study identified different spatial patterns for several sagebrush species. Wyoming big sagebrush (Artemisia tridentata Beetle&Young wyomingensis) and mountainbig sagebrush (A. tridentata Rydb. veseyana) were both associated with uniform distribution patterns. Low sagebrush (A. arbuscula Nutt. arbuscula) exhibited a random pattern. Spatial patterns of vegetation (random, clumped, and uniform distribution) effect the degree of tortusoity of flow paths and hydraulic roughness on rangelands.Additional refinements to the Chezy friction coefficient that incorporates estimates of roughness coefficients for rills and interrill areas should be considered through additional resistance factors such as plant dispersion coefficients. The water erosion prediction project (WEPP) model is a physically-based hydrology and erosion model. In recent years, the hydrology prediction within the model has been improved for forest watershed modeling by incorporating shallow lateral flow into watershed runoff prediction. This has greatly improved WEPP’s hydrologic performance on small watersheds with seasonal flows, but the current vers...

Terrain Analysis Using Digital Elevation Models in Hydrology

This paper describes methods that use digital elevation models (DEMs) in hydrology, implemented as an ArcGIS toolbar using Visual Basic and the ESRI object library. I describe generalized channel network delineation to objectively estimate drainage density and by using terrain curvature accommodate spatially variable drainage density. The multiple flow direction field determined from a DEM also...

Wepp Internet Interfaces for Forest Erosion Prediction1

The Water Erosion Prediction Project (WEPP) is a physically based erosion model for applications to dryland and irrigated agriculture, rangeland, and forests. U.S. Forest Service (USFS) experience showed that WEPP was not being adapted because of the difficulty in building files describing the input conditions in the existing interfaces. To address this difficulty, a suite of Internet interface...

The hydrodynamic response of a semi-arid headwater wetland to technical rehabilitation interventions

Loss of wetland extent continues to be documented as a significant problem and this is true for the headwaters of the Sand River system in the north-east of South Africa. Here wetlands are undergoing severe down-cutting by erosion gullies (dongas) leading to desiccation of the system and loss of viable substrate that is used for subsistence agriculture. The Manalana sub-catchment was the focus ...
